The Portage Daily Graphic newspaper will no longer be a daily print publication, as it's moving to a weekly format.
Sun Media announced on Monday it will start publishing the Daily Graphic one day a week instead of five, starting later this month.
Many readers of the Portage Daily Graphic are getting their news from the newspaper's website instead, according to Sun Media. (CBC)Many readers are going to the newspaper's website instead, according to the company.
The Daily Graphic's move to a weekly publication does not surprise Portage la Prairie Mayor Earl Porter, who says in the last year, the paper had more news and advertising from Winnipeg rather than from Portage.
"I'd rather have a weekly paper that had local content than have a daily paper that had all Winnipeg content in it," Porter told CBC News on Tuesday.
"The local businesses that always have advertised in the Portage paper, they feel like they've got really stiff competition with the Winnipeg stuff coming into our paper."
Porter agreed that a lot of people in Portage, a city of about 13,000 people, are getting their news online these days.
