Sixty-five people were evacuated from the Winnipeg Taxation Centre after a fire broke out just before 10 CT this morning.

Fire crews were called after heavy smoke was reported in the lobby of the building on Stapon Road.

The fire broke out underneath a concrete floor and spread. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours, and fire officials said it was a challenging task to access the fire.

No one was injured but the fire chief said damage is estimated to be about $200,000.

Tax records undamaged

No tax records were damaged but workers will not be returning to the building until Monday.

A spokesman with Canada Revenue Agency said about 85 people were processing tax returns.

Platoon Chief Albert Sigfusson said the fire is now out and is not considered suspicious.

"The difficulty was in getting access to the concrete floor, chopping the hole larger and cutting through the steel barriers and trying to keep ahead of the fire that way," Sigfusson said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
