The Forks is shutting down a number of access points to its River Trail in Winnipeg.
The Hugo, Osborne and Legislature access points are the ones that will be closed as of Friday. The trail itself can still be used but skaters must get to it via the Forks port or access points along the Red River.
Clare MacKay, spokeswoman for The Forks North Portage Partnership, said the Shellmouth Dam was opened up about three weeks ago and water is now flowing into the Assiniboine River and has reached Winnipeg.
"So it's actually kind of flooding parts of the River Trail where there are any sort of cracks. It's not dangerous, and it doesn't mean that the ice is unsafe, it just means that right now it's kind of flooded and kind of yucky," she said.
If the water goes down, the access points might be reopened, MacKay said.
The Shellmouth Dam helps protect Brandon, Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg from high flows on the Assiniboine River. It is located about 24 kilometres northwest of Russell, Man.
