Iggy, one of the many dogs up for adoption by the City of Winnipeg's animal services agency. (City of Winnipeg)Winnipeg has too many pound puppies.
The city's animal services agency is near capacity for impounded dogs and is holding a sale to try to find homes for them.
The Adopt-a-Dog sale will be held at 1057 Logan Ave. on the following days and times:
- Feb. 21: Noon to 5:30 p.m.
- Feb. 22: Noon to 5:30 p.m.
- Feb. 23: Noon to 4:30 p.m.
- Feb. 24: Noon to 4:30 p.m.
Of the 58 dogs at the facility, 38 are available for adoption while 20 are unlicensed strays waiting for their owners to come.
Adoptions will be $99, which includes licence, microchip, spay or neuter, basic shots and basic pet health insurance.
Typically, that cost is $185.
Last year was busy year for the animal services agency, but also a successful one. Ninety-four per cent of the dogs that entered the agency were either returned to their owner, adopted, or sent to an animal rescue organization.
In 2012, it responded to 13,396 dog calls in the city, a huge jump from just four years earlier when it had 5,862 calls.
The city urges people to licence their dogs if they are more than six months of age. The licence must also be worn by the dog — strays found wearing a current licence are given a “free ride home” once a year.
In 2012, 927 dogs wearing a current licence were reunited with their owners without ever setting foot in the pound.
