The Manitoba government wants to review the way speed limits are set in the province.

Transportation minister Steve Ashton said in the next few weeks, the province will conduct a review of rules around setting speed limits.

Ashton said those rules haven't changed since the 1930's, but the safety features of vehicles and the way that roads are built have changed.

Ashton said the need for review came to light after the province changed school zone and construction zone speed limits.

"There were some gaps in the way we set speed limits and coming out of that experience I think the conclusion was that it was time for a comprehensive review," said Ashton.

Ashton hopes to have new rules in place by next year.
