Manitoba Progressive Conservative MLA Mavis Taillieu, who has represented the Morris area for almost a decade, is leaving provincial politics.
The party announced Taillieu's resignation on Tuesday, saying in a release that she plans to "focus on family, life changes and attention to health and well-being."
She also intends to help her two sons set up a new business venture, according to the party.
Tory Leader Brian Pallister said Taillieu told him on Monday evening that she will be resigning.
Pallister said while he understands her reasons for leaving, he will be sad to see her go.
"She's a wonderful teammate, very supportive and caring person," he said.
Pallister added that Taillieu is "the kind of person you enjoy to have in a work environment, someone that is positive to be around, honest and straightforward to a fault."
Taillieu, 60, was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the June 2003 election. She was re-elected in 2007 and in 2011.
She has served as the PC Party's critic for culture, heritage and tourism, family services and housing, immigration and multiculturalism, advanced education and literacy, and infrastructure and transportation. She has also been the Official Opposition house leader and caucus whip.
Pallister praised Taillieu's positive attitude and "willingness to do the work."
"The disciplined dedication is something that I think has set an example for her colleagues over a long period of time," he said.
A byelection will have to be called in the Morris constituency to replace Taillieu.
Pallister said he wants Premier Greg Selinger to call the byelection early enough so that a new MLA will be in place in time for the spring session.
