Officers discover sexual assault in progress when responding to break-in call

A 14-year-old boy is facing multiple charges after a break-in and sexual assault on a teenage woman Saturday evening.
Winnipeg police got a call about a break and enter in progress in an Elmwood home around 6:30 p.m.
When officers arrived they found a 17-year-old woman being seriously sexually assaulted. The suspect fled immediately, and officers pursued him on foot.
He was taken into custody a short time later.
Police believe the suspect broke into the home using a hammer. The woman was home alone at the time and was seriously sexually assaulted.
A 14-year-old boy is now facing a slew of charges including sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter, forcible confinement and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
Police said the suspect may have targeted the home, though they don't believe the victim and suspect knew each other.
The teen is in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre, and the sex crimes unit continues to investigate.
