Two 15-year-old boys have been charged with attempted murder, after a 41-year-old Winnipeg man was shot on Long Plain First Nation Saturday.
The RCMP responded to a home in the community on Saturday after receiving a call about an unresponsive man at about 1:30 a.m. CT.
The victim has been identified as 41-year-old Barry Myran-Tizzard. Family members said he was visiting his father when he was attacked.
Myran-Tizzard’s cousin, Sheila Yellowquill, said she found her cousin clinging to life inside a home in the community.
“His eyes were closed, and it was pretty obvious the gun wound in his head and the pool of blood,” said Yellowquill.
"I kept encouraging him," she said. "We all kept calling his name and encouraging him. I am a pastor, so I prayed for him."
She said early Saturday morning, four teens came into the house asking for shelter to escape from the cold.
They were allowed in, but when they were asked to leave, Myran-Tizzard was shot, according to Yellowquill, who added that the group had a history of harassing the family.
Now, two 15-year-old boys have been charged with attempted murder.
Peter Yellowquill, a relative of the victim, told CBC News the family isn’t sure what caused the shooting.
"Obviously we're in shock and trying to grapple with what appears to be just a random event," he said.
Other family members who contacted CBC News called the shooting a senseless act of violence.
First Nation grapples with youth crime
David Meeches, the chief of the Long Plain First Nation, said the event has left the community shaken.
It’s the second time in a month there has been a violent incident in the area. In January, a man was found dead after being attacked.
“Everybody is sort of taking a look at our community and taking a look at themselves and assessing what we need to do to prevent this from happening in the future,” said Meeches.
Both incidents involved multiple young suspects, and Meeches said the community has resources for youth but sometimes they’re not enough.
Myran-Tizzard remains in a Winnipeg hospital in critical condition.
