A 31-year-old man is facing several charges after Winnipeg police say he broke into a home and threatened to set it on fire.

Police responded to a call of an armed suspect trying to break into a home on the 500 block of Simcoe Street at about 12:50 p.m. CST Friday.

When officers arrived to the scene they found a man inside the home.

Police said that's when the man threatened to set fire to the residence and began igniting items in the house.

Smoke from the burning items started to billow from a south-side window of the home.

The fire department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.

The man is facing several charges including break and enter, arson and damage to property.
