An inmate at Stony Mountain Institution is suing two Manitoba doctors and the province for failing to diagnose a lump in his thigh as cancer in time to treat it. He's been given six months to live.
An inmate at Stony Mountain Institution is suing the province, two doctors and their clinics.
Daniel Roy, 26, is also suing an employee at Headingley Correctional Centre and an office worker at one of the clinics.
The statement of claim says Roy, an inmate at Headingley at the time, started complaining about a lump on his thigh in May 2010.
It says the doctor told him it was a fat deposit and nothing to worry about.
It alleges that in spite of Roy's repeated complaints, the doctor continued to insist the lump was not a concern, even though it had grown to a size of two to three centimetres and had become painful.
In 2011, the doctor referred Roy to another doctor and in April of 2011 that doctor ordered an MRI.
But there was a mix-up, and Roy missed the appointment.
By the time the lump was diagnosed, it was found to be cancer.
The statement says that Roy, now an inmate at Stony, was told early this month he has six months to live.
He's suing for damages.
