Demolition crews continued destroying Schreimer’s Greenhouse in Otterburne on Tuesday, following a devastating fire.
A blaze ripped through the plant, causing up to $6 million damage.Scott Schreimer said crews were finally allowed back into the greenhouse on Monday to begin demolition.
Schreimer said the company plans to keep on 16 foreign workers even though the greenhouse was destroyed.
"We're not interested in sending them back," said Schreimer. "These people have put -- sold everything they had to come here, and they don't want to go home, so we're not going to send them home no matter what happens."
The greenhouse grew cucumbers year-round. Cucumber production at the greenhouse won’t be able to begin until it is rebuilt.
“We’ll find work for them to do,” said Schreimer. “We’ll find something on the farm site, and if we can use them in the clean-up and the process of reconstruction then that’s what we’ll do.”
Schreimer hopes the greenhouse can be rebuilt by spring so cucumber production can resume in the summer.
