This week's mild weather has created icy hazards at The Forks in Winnipeg.
Norman Simm had to think quickly to protect his two-year-old son from chunks of ice cascading from the sloped roof at the marketplace on Sunday.
Crews knock down ice and snow from the roof at The Forks on Tuesday. (Nelly Gonzalez/CBC)Simm and his son George were walking near the Forks Market building in the afternoon when large chunks of ice began crashing down from the roof.
“So he was doing what a two-year-old does, looking at everything, and he was standing closer to the wall, and the ice was coming down quite fast,” said Simm.
Simm said he quickly grabbed his son and cradled him under his body while the ice fell on his back.
The next day, Simm filed a complaint to administration at The Forks, which told CBC they don't take these incidents lightly and say the safety of the public is always a top priority.
On Tuesday, crews were clearing away ice and snow hanging off the roof and had yellow caution tape up for a few hours.
"I wonder if the warm temperatures if that rapid melt sort of surprised us a little bit," said Clare MacKay, marketing manager at the Forks.
Representatives from The Forks said it can’t eliminate all risk, but it will do what it can to keep the ice cleared and the area safe.
