A Saskatoon man has died after he was struck by a semi-trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Winnipeg early Wednesday morning.
The crash happened just after 4 a.m. CT, about five kilometres east of the community of Richer, which is about 35 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg.
The 42-year-old man was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, RCMP said. They did not release his name.
Police say it appears the man had walked in front of the eastbound semi, in an attempt to flag down the driver, when he was hit.
The 66-year-old man who was driving the semi was not hurt.
RCMP say officers later found a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck stuck in a ditch at the scene.
The truck had had been stolen from a nearby home, according to police, who believe the two incidents are related.
The eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway in the Richer area were closed for several hours as police investigated the incident. They were reopened just before noon.
