Some Winnipeggers are getting ready to deliver holiday cheer, in the form of Christmas hampers, to families in need across the city this weekend.
Volunteers with Sam's Christmas will be delivering hampers to 256 families on Saturday — way more than the three families Jeff Fisher helped when he started the annual holiday drive 11 years ago.
Fisher says the goal when he founded Sam's Christmas — named in memory of his late grandfather, Sam — was to give a traditional turkey dinner, some non-perishable food items and presents to those in need.
"I wanted a way to remember him, and so the first year after he passed away, I found three inner-city families that I provided a Christmas for — hot turkey dinners, Christmas trees, coats," Fisher said.
Over the years, the campaign has grown to include more families, more volunteers and more donated items.
This year's hampers will have new clothes, toys, outdoor winter wear, desktop computers, food and other items.
"I think people want to give. Christmas is about love," Fisher said.
"I think it's just going to keep growing."
