A 40-year-old man escaped from his vehicle after it plunged into the frigid Red River at Lockport, Man., on Tuesday.

Emergency crews were called to the Lockport Dam just before 5 a.m. CT and found the driver, wet and cold, at the scene. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the man was driving the vehicle on sections of the frozen river when he hit open water.

RCMP are trying to determine if the vehicle, which remains underwater, had any other people inside. The area is known for fast currents.

CBC News reporter Tiar Wilson travelled to the scene and described seeing a set of tire tracks leading to the open water. She also said there are footprints going across the ice, leading away from the open section.

RCMP say they have determined no one else was inside the vehicle at the time. Crews have since cleared the scene.

Lockport is located about 20 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.
