Water and sewer rates in Winnipeg won't be going up as much as previously projected, according to the city.

Officials said in a release Thursday that rates will increase by 4.3 per cent from 2013 to 2015. That translates into an increase of $3 a month for the average homeowner.

The city had originally projected those rates to rise by six to 6.5 per cent a year over the next three years.

However, officials said further review and analysis helped them determine that the rate increase did not need to be so high.

The city says the water and sewer rate increases will help the city address rising inflation costs and make upgrades to its sewage treatment facilities, as mandated by the Manitoba government.

The increases still have to be approved by council. A city report recommending the increases will be considered by the standing policy committee on infrastructure renewal and public works next Monday.
