Retailers in Winnipeg are busting out their own Black Friday deals this week, in the hopes of keeping local shoppers from heading to the United States.
Shopping centres will be open several hours earlier than usual on Friday, including Kildonan Place, St. Vital and Polo Park.
Meanwhile, a number of small businesses around Winnipeg are offering big sales, in an effort to compete with Black Sunday deals south of the border.
"The entire store's 30 to 60 per cent off," said Thai Tran, owner of the Luxe + Charm boutique in Osborne Village.
Tran said business has been slow since the fall, but she hopes it'll pick up on Friday.
She added that it's the first time her store will offer a Black Friday sale, which she has previously associated with stores in the U.S.
"Last year we didn't hear too much about Black Friday — it was more of an American sale," Tran said.
"This year we've been seeing it going around more, so we decided to do Black Friday here too."
Even U.S.-based retailers like American Apparel are holding sales in their Canadian stores.
"This is the first time that we're doing it here in Canada," said Kiana Deandenault, an assistant manager at the American Apparel store on Osborne Street.
But despite efforts locally, some hotels in Grand Forks, North Dakota, are already booked up thanks to cross-border shoppers from Canada.
