Many Winnipeggers approve of the $20 million worth of new bike lanes, trails and paths that have been built in the city in the last couple years, a new poll suggests.

In a survey done for the Winnipeg Free Press, Probe Research interviewed 600 Winnipeg adults by phone between Sept. 19 and Oct. 14 to ask them if they think the new cycling infrastructure has been successful in making travel around the city easier for cyclists.

Seventy-one per cent of those polled said yes, including 20 per cent who said it was very successful. Meanwhile, 21 per cent disagreed, saying the investments have not been beneficial.

The poll also asked whether the infrastructure benefitted motorists, and 60 per cent said yes, including nine percent who said it had been very successful.

But one-third of those surveyed said the bike lanes and paths have not successfully helped drivers in the city get from place to place.

Probe says with a survey of this size there is a 95 per cent certainty that the results are within 4.1 percentage points of what they would have been if the city's entire adult population had been interviewed.
