Winnipeg police have charged a 49-year-old man with manslaughter in connection with a fatal stabbing in the city's West End.

The man has been charged with manslaughter in the death on Friday evening of Adam Jackson Nattaway, 39, police announced on Sunday.

On Friday, police were called around 6:30 p.m. CT to a pizza parlour in the 500 block of Sherbrook Street, where an injured man showed up seeking help.

Nattaway had suffered serious stab wounds to his upper body, according to police. He was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

"The victim had previously attended a gathering at a suite in the 600 block of Sherbrook Street. While at that location, an altercation did take place," Const. Jason Michalyshen told CBC News on Sunday.

It's believed that Nattaway then fled to the Pizza Shack restaurant, a block away from the apartment building.

Walked into restaurant

Surveillance video footage from the Pizza Shack shows a man, his upper body covered in blood, walking in and sitting down.

Restaurant staff told CBC News the man was trying to speak, but he was hurting too badly.

The man is seen collapsing on the floor a few minutes later. Police officers and paramedics are then seen arriving at the restaurant and starting CPR on him.

"The ambulance people come and those guys take care of him and take him [to hospital] fast," said Sandeep Uppal, whose family has owned the Pizza Shack for about a year.

Uppal said both good and bad things happen in the neighbourhood.

In light of what happened this weekend, Uppal had a message for the public: "Just be good. Don't do that. If you are living, same way, other people [are] living," he said.

Michalyshen said investigators are trying to determine what started the dispute that led to the stabbing.
