A Roman Catholic church in south-central Manitoba has been restored to its original condition, just in time for its centennial celebration.

The Sacred Heart Church in Fannystelle, Man., was restored after area residents raised more than $100,000 to repair the building.

The church, which opened its doors on Oct. 23, 1912, was packed on Sunday morning with parishioners from Fannystelle and surrounding communities for its centennial service.

Rachell Nadeau, who organized the fundraising campaign, said the building was in dire need of repairs.

"In a few years it probably would've been torn down because it just was really falling apart," she told CBC News.

"So we had our first steak supper and we sold windows — $5,000 each; everyone wants to have their name on a window — and that first night, we raised $50,000."

Nadeau said when the decision was made to repair the church, she knew the community would step up.

"To tell you the truth, I wasn't really that surprised because of the generosity of the people from this area," she said.

"I just know how generous these people are, and how important the church is to them."

Fannystelle is located about 50 kilometres west of Winnipeg.
