Dozens of volunteers concerned about the state of trees in a Winnipeg cemetery spent Saturday pruning as many elms as they could.

There are an estimated 600 elms in the Elmwood Cemetery, and many have been identified as having Dutch Elm disease.

The disease destroys the wood, and pruning dead wood can save them.

Organizer Matt Vinet grew up in this area and said he has fond memories of the cemetery, which is why he is working to save the trees.
