A 25-year-old man has been charged in connection to a street racing crash that killed a 26-year-old man in western Manitoba.

Dallas Joseph Genaille was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo near Swan River on Sept. 30 when he got into a race with the 26-year-old man, who was behind the wheel of a 1994 Pontiac Grand AM.

The race happened at about 1:30 a.m. on Highway 83, on the way into the town.

According to RCMP, the 26-year-old driver failed to negotiate the merge lane onto Main Street from the highway. His vehicle went over the boulevard and struck a metal light standard.

The man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was transported to the Swan Valley Hospital and later airlifted to Winnipeg in critical condition.

He died on Oct. 3.

Genaille, whose car did not crash, is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while street racing.

He is scheduled to appear in Swan River provincial court on Nov. 21, 2012.
