A group of Grade 12 students from Winnipeg got more than they bargained for when a snowstorm hit during their camping trip.
The 22 students, from College Pierre Elliot Trudeau headed out on the Mantario Trail in southeast Manitoba last week for what was supposed to be a three-day camping trip.
Just as they started to set up camp it began to rain, said vice principal Michelle Williams.
When they woke up the next morning, there was more than 24 centimeters of snow on the ground.
A massive snowstorm hit the region, leaving thousands without power as hydro poles were toppled and lines snapped.
When the storm was all done, 60 centimetres had fallen. With all of their gear drenched, the camping group decided it was best to head home.
It took them 7 ½ hours to hike out and though their trip ended early, the memories will last forever.
"They'll never ever forget this. They learned some lifelong lessons," Williams said.
"We thought we would get some traumatized students but you know, they seemed to be, they weathered this one fairly well."
