A Manitoba farmer discovered two yearling calves shot and killed on his land southwest of Winnipeg.

It happened Oct. 6 near the town of Carberry.

When the farmer, Allan Reynolds, went looking for the missing animals, he found them less than two kilometres from his property. One of them had been mutilated.

"Its jawbone had been skinned out. They took the hide off it and then they removed the tongue," he said.

"And then the other one was about 50 feet [15 metres] away. It looked like it had been shot right above the eye.

The calves were valued at $900 each, police said.

"We're going to try and extract the bullets from the heads of the animals in hopes of being able to further identify firearms that may have shot the bullets," said Cpl. Andre Jarrid St. Pierre.

"We will be actively checking hunters and people in the area who have firearms in their vehicles."

The matter is still under investigation and no further information is available at this time, RCMP said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Carberry RCMP at 204-834-2905 or Manitoba Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
