Wrecked vehicles following a downtown crash on Portage Avenue Monday afternoon. (Gary Solilak/CBC)Downtown Portage Avenue remained closed early Monday evening after a multi-vehicle crash at noon left one person in critical condition.

Police, ambulance and first responders were at the scene of the crash involving as many as three vehicles at eastbound Portage at Langside Street.

Two people were taken to hospital, one of them in critical condition, police said.

Muhammed Danjuma saw a silver vehicle appear to go into the wrong lane and come into collision with an SUV. "It is very shocking," Danjuma said of one seriously injured person. "I hope he survives it. I hope so. I really feel for him."

At least two vehicles were directly involved in the crash and a third damaged vehicle was parked some distance from the crash site.

Portage was closed in both directions between Langside and Good Street as investigators spent the afternoon taking photos and measurements at the scene.
