Man charged in fatal hair salon crash

A 32-year-old man has been charged in connection to the death of hair salon worker Kendall Wiebe in April.
Hair salon worker Kendall Wiebe died after being struck by a runaway Jeep in April. (Facebook)Wiebe, 27, and another woman were working at the Ultracuts salon near Portage Avenue and Cavalier Drive when a vehicle drove into the store.
Wiebe was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died. The other woman, 25, was sent to hospital in stable condition.
The driver was not injured.
At the time of the incident on April 7, police said the man was driving a Jeep Liberty northbound in the area of Rouge Road and Allard Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle.
The Jeep moved across Portage Avenue, went over the curb and veered across the parking lot of a Safeway at a high rate of speed before crashing into the salon.
Police said drugs and alcohol were not believed to be factors and a few days after the crash, they said no charges were pending against the driver.
However, on Tuesday, they said a "comprehensive examination was performed" on the Jeep and mechanical failure has been ruled out as a cause.
The man is charged with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous operation of vehicle.
