One of two men who were found shot in Winnipeg's West End early Saturday morning has died, according to police.

Winnipeg police found Jordan Dennis Houle, 24, and a 19-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds around the 600 block of Maryland Street shortly after midnight.

Houle was taken to hospital in critical condition, but he has since succumbed to his injuries, police said in a release Sunday morning.

The 19-year-old man was taken to hospital in serious condition, but he has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Police say they believe both men were shot on Maryland Street, but the 19-year-old ran a block over to McGee Street, where residents say he fell onto the ground in a yard.

One resident told CBC News she applied pressure to the man's wounds and kept him conscious until officers arrived.

CBC News has learned that Houle was the brother of Cherisse Houle, 17, whose body was found outside of Winnipeg in June 2009.

Cherisse Houle's death is being investigated as part of Project Devote, a Manitoba police task force examining 28 homicide and missing persons cases.

The Winnipeg Police Service's major crimes unit began investigating the incident on Saturday, but homicide investigators have since taken over, according to the release.

The Maryland Street incident marks the 23rd homicide in Winnipeg so far this year, as well as the sixth shooting — and the second shooting-related fatality — in just over a week.

Jeffrey Lau, 23, was killed in a double-shooting that took place early Thursday morning inside a Salisbury House restaurant on Pembina Highway and Stafford Street.

A 22-year-old man who was also shot remains in hospital in stable condition.

Police say the Salisbury House shooting may be gang-related. No arrests have been made to date.

Police would not comment on a possible motive for the Maryland Street attack, but a spokesman said they currently do not believe Houle or the other victim has ties to street gangs.

The spokesman added that police do not believe the latest shooting is linked to the other violent incidents that have taken place over the past week.
