A woman and her teenage daughter are in hospital after being assaulted Monday night in Winnipeg.

It happened just before midnight at an apartment building in the 1500 block of Pembina Highway, in the city's Fort Garry neighbourhood.

The mother, 46, and daughter, 13, are in stable condition.

A man known to the woman and girl went to their apartment suite and used a weapon to beat them, according to police, who said the victims were able to call 911.

The man fled when the emergency call was made, police said.

He was later arrested at his own residence.

A 32-year-old man is in custody and the investigation is continuing.
