E-waste rule changes threaten non-profit group

A change in how Manitoba handles e-waste could threaten a non-profit that employs people with intellectual disabilities.
Equal Opportunities West takes old computers and other electronics, strips them down and sells the copper, aluminum and other parts to recyclers.
The money is used to pay the salaries of the workers.
"Well, it's going to make things tough if we don't make our budgets," said executive director Susan Morgan.
The organization used to get most of their e-waste from small companies and other groups.
But now, the province's Electronics Products Recycling Association (EPRA) requires the same companies to ship the e-waste out of province to companies that strip them down.
"All those places that we had made arrangements with are now part of the EPRA and they're no longer allowed to let us take that material," said Morgan.
"We'll have to come up with other sources. I don't quite know what that's going to be but we'll have to come up with something."
Morgan said they'll take any old electronics to try and keep afloat.
