University of Manitoba law students who attended a forum to discuss a sex scandal involving a judge were surprised to see the man whose allegations sparked the controversy.

Alex Chapman came forward in 2010 with claims of sexual harassment against Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench Justice Lori Douglas, and her husband, Winnipeg lawyer Jack King.

His allegations prompted the Canadian Judicial Council to launch an inquiry into Douglas's conduct, which could determine if she should stay on the bench.

On Thursday, Chapman showed up at the forum, hosted by the university's law school, in which professors and students discussed issues related to the Douglas inquiry.

"If you're going to be lecturing to the students about the facts of the Douglas matter, then put the facts out there," Chapman told the assembled panel and audience members.

The forum was organized after professors at the law school were flooded with questions from students about the judicial council's inquiry.

"Some are very interested in [knowing] how can it be that these salacious details are everywhere all the time," said Karen Busby, a law professor who was on the panel.

Some students who attended the forum said they were happy to hear Chapman's views on the matter.
