A teenage boy who was beaten in Winnipeg's North End last week has died.

The 16-year-old boy's death, which police believe is tied to a confrontation between rival street gangs, marks the city's 21st homicide so far this year.

Paris Rene Cameron Bruce, 16, died on Friday at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre, according to an obituary sent by family members to CBC News.

"He will be dearly missed and happily remembered as our Little Parrot. Now he is our sweet angel who will be with us all in our hearts forever," the obituary states in part.

Police officers were called to the 300 block of Aberdeen Avenue at around 8 a.m. CT on Sept. 4, where they found the injured teen.

He was initially taken to hospital in unstable condition, but he died of his injuries overnight Friday, said police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen.

"The nature of the injuries were serious when we initially reported it," Michalyshen said.

"Unfortunately, our victim did succumb to those injuries."

Police await autopsy results

No arrests have been made in the case to date.

Michalyshen said an autopsy may determine the cause of death.

"We're waiting for those autopsy results to provide us with specific details with regard to the nature of the injures and … whether or not this was a combination of being physically assaulted as well as a possible weapon being used," he said.

Family members said Bruce enjoyed movies, playing X-Box games with his friends, sketching, trying new foods, and assembling things, "even if that meant he had to take it apart just to reassemble them."

"Paris had many nicknames. He was known as Lil Man, Pierre, Strawberry and Monsterboy," the obituary states.

"Parrot was the most common. He got this one from his grandmother. Once he learned how to talk, there was no stopping him. He had many stories and shared them like a parrot.

"He was a colorful boy who always had a smile on his face. Just being around him would bring one to yours too."

A funeral will take place Friday afternoon in Winnipeg, according to the family.
