A 29-year-old man remains in hospital after his semi trailer collided with another semi and a fire truck Thursday on the Trans-Canada Highway near St. Francois Xavier, Man.

RCMP and fire crews were first called to the highway, near the junction of Highway 26, at around 1:30 p.m. CT on reports that a semi had spilled diesel.

The semi was pulled over to the side of the road, and crews blocked one eastbound lane to traffic so they could clean up the spill, police say in a news release.

But police say about 45 minutes later, an eastbound semi somehow collided with the parked semi as well as a fire truck that was on the scene.

The driver of the second semi, a 29-year-old man from Steinbach, Man., was transported to hospital, where police say he was last reported to be in critical but stable condition.

A 65-year-old Ontario man who was driving the first semi was not injured. One RCMP officer and two firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said in a release.

The Trans-Canada Highway fully reopened to traffic by around 9:30 p.m. The incident is under investigation.
