Fans of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders are showing off their team pride and upping the trash talk in advance of the annual Banjo Bowl on Sunday.

Winnipeg is hosting the Banjo Bowl, an annual grudge match between the CFL's prairie rivals that takes place a week after the Labour Day classic in Regina.

The Blue Bombers — and their fans — are seeking redemption this Sunday, after the team was crushed by the Roughriders 52-0 at the Labour Day game.

As fans gear up for the Banjo Bowl, two Winnipeg musicians posted on YouTube a satirical music video featuring — what else? — banjo picking, some hillbilly harmonies, and a lot of straw.

The video was the brainchild of Jeremy Williams, a local musician, comedian and Shaw Television personality, as well as rapper Broms of Filthy Animals and "their two attractive cousins," according to their YouTube page.

Riders fans head to Winnipeg

Meanwhile, a green wave of fans is heading east for the contest including 13 who departed Regina on Friday morning, in a large stand-up limousine.

Lois Puddecke, who was in the Winnipeg-bound limo, told CBC News she has never been to a Banjo Bowl before, but she's not worried about entering enemy territory.

"Oh, it's awesome," she exclaimed, while her fellow fans yelled, "Go Riders!" in the background.

"We just have to wear green and we intimidate anybody."

Friendly wagers

The term "Banjo Bowl" was coined in 2004, the season after then-Winnipeg kicker Troy Westwood was quoted as saying people from Regina were banjo-picking inbreds.

He later "apologized" by saying most people in Saskatchewan did not know how to play that instrument.

This year's match has some in Winnipeg making friendly wagers with their counterparts in Saskatchewan.

Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce chairman Brian Bowman tweeted a photograph on Friday of him, Bombers vice-president Jim Bell and quarterback Buck Pierce showing off a Winnipeg jersey designed for Cory Furman, chairman of the Regina and District Chamber of Commerce.

Should Winnipeg win, Furman will have to be photographed wearing the Bombers jersey while standing at Regina city hall or the Saskatchewan legislature building.

If Saskatchewan wins, Bowman will have to stand at the corner of Portage Avenue and Main Street with a Riders jersey on.

"I think Rider green would look good at Portage and Main," Furman said in a news release.

Both Bowman and Furman are contributing to a $500 pot that the winning team can donate to its charity of choice.

Meanwhile, fans of the Blue and Gold have a lot of dough riding on the game. If they win, Tim Hortons will give out 30,000 doughnuts — one to every ticket holder who comes in with their stub.
