People across Manitoba are trying to stay cool amid scorching heat and high humidex levels today.

The daytime high peaked at 37 C in Brandon, Man., on Wednesday afternoon, shattering a heat record for Aug. 29 of 36.7 C that was set in 1972.

Meanwhile, it was 35 C in Winnipeg as of 4 p.m. CT, which comes close to the record high of 36.1 C that was also set in 1972.

The relative humidity in the capital city has been around 40 per cent, resulting in an uncomfortably high humidex level, says CBC meteorologist John Sauder.

"You put those two together and you just an extreme discomfort by way of the humidex … so it kind of feels like it would feel around 42 C," he said.

A heat advisory is in effect on Wednesday, with provincial health officials warning the public to be cautious if they plan to go outdoors.

Temperatures are expected to cool down a little on Thursday — the daytime high in Winnipeg is forecast to reach 25 C, which is still above the normal high of 22 C.
