A Wal-Mart store in south Winnipeg will become the first in Manitoba to house a medical clinic, meaning shoppers can fit in a doctor's appointment while they shop.
The clinic, which will open in January at the Wal-Mart location at Kenaston and McGillivray boulevards, will have family physicians and offer walk-in services.
A Wal-Mart medical clinic like this one will open in January at Kenaston and McGillivray boulevards. (Jack Nathan Health)It will make it convenient for shoppers to complete all their errands, even seeing a doctor, says Mike Marchelletta, president of Jack Nathan Health, a management company that has set up more than 30 clinics in Wal-Mart stores across Canada.
"You could take a paddle pager and you could browse the electronics aisle, grab your groceries, get your nails done at the nail salon, or visit one of the other licensees like McDonald's and grab a bite. And we'll buzz you when it's five minutes to your turn," Marchelletta told CBC News.
Winnipeg chiropractor Nitan Arora, who will operate the Wal-Mart clinic, said he is currently looking for doctors to staff it.
Arora said given its location — a booming residential area — the clinic will likely be busy.
"It's strategically located right at the front of the Wal-Mart store as well, so there will be a large volume of walk-in traffic walking by on a daily basis," he said.
"So I do believe that the clinic's going to get quite busy pretty quickly."
Arora said he eventually wants the clinic at the Wal-Mart store to be open seven days a week, including evenings.
Officials are also looking at opening a medical clinic at the Wal-Mart in Steinbach, Man.
Four Superstore locations in Winnipeg already house medical clinics.
