Members of Manitoba's Muslim community began celebrating the end of Ramadan today with prayers in downtown Winnipeg.

Many attended prayers at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on Sunday morning to kick off Eid al-Fitr, which concludes a holy month of fasting from sunrise to sunset.

"It's just a beautiful scene," Shahina Siddiqui, executive director of the Islamic Social Services Association, told CBC News.

"In Winnipeg we have Muslims from 54 different cultures and countries, right? So you see that reflected there in the clothing. And, of course, the children [are] all dressed in their Sunday finery."

Shahzad Musaddiq, who went to the convention centre, said Eid festivities will continue throughout the day as family members and friends meet, embrace and feast.

"Now is sort of the time to celebrate and enjoy the time that we had, and celebrate those 30 days we spent together, fasting," Musaddiq said.

"Often times you'll be invited to people's houses throughout the city, you'll be going around to open houses and you'll have food, which is fun because you've spent a whole month of fasting during the day, praying at night."
