Near-perfect growing conditions in most of southern Manitoba and skyrocketing corn prices mean many farmers are cashing in.

Farmer Jason Kehler expects to get as much as 130 bushels of corn an acre this year, compared to the usual 110 bushels.

Kehler attributes the increase to May and June rainfall.

"If mother nature doesn't co-operate, we're done," he said. "That's as simple as that, so I'm extremely happy to have the weather we've had."

But he says in addition, farmers are getting more money for every cob.

"I can remember getting $3.50 for corn and thinking that was just fantastic," he said. "Now, we're banging on 8 bucks," he added.

A drought in the U.S. midwest is pushing up the price of corn.
