The sister of a weekend stabbing victim says the incident occurred after an argument over money.

Winnipeg police on Monday identified Cherie Lynn Richard, 20, as the victim in a stabbing that occurrecd in the 500 block of Furby Street at around 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Richard is Winnipeg’s 19th homicide victim.

Richard's sister Shaylene described the attack as an argument over money.

She told CBC News that she and Cherie were biking in the area when they stopped outside an apartment building.

That's when she got into an argument with two females and a male about money.

Richard said the male then ran up to her sister, who was minding her own business, and stabbed her. "I was arguing with two girls and that one guy and I told my sister to go drive up ahead and that guy ran up to my sister and stabbed her," Richard said.

"She's not a fighter. She's not the type to go start arguments with people. And she doesnt go and start drama or anything like that. She always kept to herself. She wasn't gang-related or anything."

A neighbouring nurse ran out to try and save the young woman.

“From my window I could see him working on her,” Laura Jones said. “He was doing compressions. Unfortunately it didn’t work out to save her life, but he had no thought about his own safety; he just rushed out and worked on her.”

Another witness said she saw the two women on bikes outside the apartment building when a man rushed out of the apartment block and stabbed someone in the stomach before running away.

The ambulance then showed up within minutes as a neighbour continued to try and resuscitate her.

Beverley Symonds, who usually babysits in the area, said she was shocked by what happened in what is usually a very peaceful area.

“It’s shocking, I can’t believe it,” Symonds said.”I woke up and there’s tape everywhere. Just thinking about these kids because they play outside all the time and I watch them.”
