A former youth soccer coach in Winnipeg has pleaded guilty to sex-related charges involving an underage girl he was coaching at the time.

Steven Skavinsky, who coached girls soccer teams in the city, pleaded guilty on Monday to four separate charges:

  • Sexual interference.
  • Sexual exploitation.
  • Possessing child pornography.
  • Luring a child over the internet.

Skavinsky was charged in June 2010 in connection with offences involving a girl under the age of 14 that took place over a 2½-year period that ended a month before his arrest.

Court documents have indicated that the sexual assaults took place between Jan. 1, 2008, and May 15, 2010.

In court on Monday, Skavinsky admitted that he did become involved with one of his players.

Skavinsky developed a relationship in 2008 with the girl, who was 11 years old at the time, and they began phoning and texting each other, according to court documents.

Skavinsky had sex with the girl while she was between 12 and 14 years old, and they shared explicit photographs of each other online.

Court documents show that Skavinsky told the girl's parents that as a favour to them, he would drive her home. Instead, he took the child to his own residence.

Skavinsky's next court appearance will be in September, when lawyers will schedule a day for sentencing.

Meanwhile, Manitoba's Justice Department is trying to seize Skavinsky's home under the Criminal Property Forfeiture Act, arguing that the residence is where the criminal acts took place.

Skavinsky's lawyers have argued that the province has no jurisdiction to make such a move. The case is still before the courts.
