Assaulted man is Winnipeg's 18th homicide victim

A 20-year-old man seriously injured in an assault last week in Winnipeg's North End has died of his injuries, making him the city's 18th homicide victim so far this year.
Braden Bjornson died of serious head trauma on Friday, one week after he was found on the ground on the 200 block of Machray Avenue, according to his mother, Jacquie Bjornson.

Jacquie Bjornson told CBC News that her son was from Arborg, Man., but he had been living in Winnipeg for the past two years.
"Braden was very outgoing and had lots of friends," the elder Bjornson said Sunday.
"He came home almost every weekend. Like, he loved spending time with his family," she added. "He never missed a family thing ever … he even came out during the week if it was someone's birthday."
Was in critical condition
Police were called to the 200 block of Machray Avenue just before 5 a.m. CT on June 29, where they found the man with upper-body injuries. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Bjornson said her son was "very outdoorsy" and loved hunting, fishing, riding on quads and snowmobiling.
Braden was working in the construction industry and had just purchased a house in May on Pritchard Avenue, which is also in the North End, his mother said.
Bjornson said Braden's sister was supposed to get married next weekend, but family members are working on organizing his funeral instead.
"We're devastated. Your son's not supposed to die at 20 years old. Now we're planning a funeral, and the funeral's on Friday, and we should be planning a wedding," she said.
"Our daughter's wedding is supposed to be on Saturday, and that's postponed for now."
