Winnipeggers gear up for giveaway weekend

(CBC)Winnipeggers can go curbside shopping again this weekend.
For the third year in a row, the city is holding a spring giveaway weekend. Residents are encouraged to put out unwanted household items at the curb on Saturday and Sunday.
The city says the project helps redirect those items that might otherwise end up in the landfill.
Items set out at the curb are required to be in good condition and marked as "free."
The city launched the giveaway weekend in the fall of 2009 and although only an estimated three per cent of households participated, the city considered it a success and decided to expand it to two weekends for 2010.
The second giveaway weekend this year is scheduled for Sept. 8 and 9.

Leftover items must be removed from the curb by dusk on Sunday. Residents are encouraged to donate to local charities any items that weren't taken during the weekend.
The Consumer Product Safety Bureau lists items that aren't safe to give away, such as old-style metal tip lawn darts.
