A fire at the elementary school on Manitoba's Sagkeeng First Nation has left more than 260 students without a place to go.

Chief Donovan Fontaine said the fire broke out on the roof of Anicinabe School at about 8 p.m. Sunday and caused heavy damage.

Community leaders are having an emergency meeting Monday to figure out where to bus the students so they can finish the school year.

"I am devastated by it. It's a big blow because education is our children's future and our community's future. It's a big blow for sure," Fontaine said, adding he's grateful no one was inside.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Sagkeeng, formerly known as Fort Alexander, is located about 125 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.
