The wife of a Winnipeg man who was fatally shot on Friday says her husband was buying beer at the time of his death.

Winnipeg police say Allan Frank Crockford, 42, was found injured on a sidewalk on the 600 block of Maryland Street at around 12:10 a.m. CT Friday.

Crockford was taken to hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Police say he had an upper-body injury consistent with being shot.

His wife, Harriett Crockford, told CBC News on Saturday that her husband was coming home from the beer vendor when he was shot in the back.

Crockford said family members are disturbed by rumours that Allan may have been attacked for his beer.

Crockford, a health-care worker, said she and Allan had planned to open a computer repair shop together, since her husband had a passion for fixing computers and helping people.

"He was always helping everybody … if they wanted something with computer work, so that's why everybody called him," she said.

"He'd go and fix their computers and everything like that. Or else, they'd drop them off."

She said she will remember her husband best for his loving personality, "his laughter, his wit, and everything like that."

Winnipeg police are also investigating the death of Corey Berry, 50, who was found in Elmwood Park at around 5 a.m. Friday.

No arrests have been announced in either case to date.
