Public Safety Minister Vic Toews is expected to spend the night in an Ottawa hospital for observation as a result of the seasonal flu, a department spokesperson said Monday evening.
"Minister Toews has been battling a seasonal flu for the past number of weeks," spokesman Mike Patton said earlier Monday in an email. "As a precaution, he was taken to the hospital today for observation."
A man was taken from Parliament Hill in an ambulance around 11 a.m. ET, but CBC News has not confirmed whether it was Toews.
Patton asked that Toews's privacy be respected.
Toews appeared before a Commons committee last Tuesday looking into recent internet videos claiming to be from the group Anonymous that threatened to reveal details about his personal life if the government did not withdraw bill C-30.
The legislation, called variously the lawful access or online surveillance bill, would give police greater powers to request identifying information about internet or cellphone users without a warrant if an investigation warrants it.
