Five Manitoba jail inmates have been found guilty of brutally beating another inmate.
On Monday night, a jury in Winnipeg found each of the five men guilty of aggravated assault in connection with the Dec. 21, 2009 attack inside the Milner Ridge Correctional Centre near Beausejour, Man.
The verdict came down shortly after 10 p.m. CT, after less than seven hours of deliberations.
During the trial, which began Jan. 23, court was told that Kent Wilson was forced to the ground and kicked repeatedly during the attack at the medium-security jail.
Wilson, a diabetic who was 33 years old at the time, was going for his daily insulin shot when a jail guard accidentally opened the door to the gymnasium, allowing a number of the accused inmates out, court heard.
Jurors saw surveillance video that showed the inmates running out of the gymnasium and down the hallway where Wilson was attacked.
Wilson's injuries were catastrophic, and he is now physically and mentally disabled, Crown prosecutors said during the trial.
