Four men are dead after an early-morning fire quickly engulfed a residential trailer in Selkirk, Man.

RCMP and local fire officials were called to the trailer on Bermuda Bay just before 5 a.m. CT Saturday in the community about 33 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.

Police confirmed four men died in the blaze, while a 19-year-old man escaped and was taken to hospital in Winnipeg.

Hospital officials said Saturday afternoon that the injured man was in critical condition.

CBC News reported that the victims were Lawrence Traverse, 42, his son Gerald, 18, Jason Marsh, 39, and Aaron St. Jean, 37.

RCMP said the person who escaped the fire, identified by neighbours as Brendan Crate, was a visiting friend of the residents.

According to witnesses, the fire spread rapidly through the trailer and produced heavy smoke.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames in about 45 minutes, they said.

RCMP say it's too early to determine what caused the fire, CBC's Sheila North-Wilson reported Saturday.

"People around here don't know what caused it either," North-Wilson said. "It's bitterly cold and people say this is a shock to this small, tight-knit community."

RCMP said autopsies would be performed on Monday.
