Police have laid second-degree murder charges against three males in connnection with the stabbing death of Ian John Folster. (Facebook)A 29-year-old man who was repeatedly stabbed 10 days ago has died from his injuries prompting police to lay charges of second-degree murder against three males, including a 17-year-old, who have been in custody since shortly after the attack.
The victim has been identified as Ian John Folster, from Winnipeg.
Police said officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Bannerman Avenue around 4 a.m. CT Jan. 25 to respond to a reported stabbing.
"Upon arrival, officers located a 29-year-old male and a 29-year-old female, both of whom had been stabbed," police said. The injured male was taken to hospital in critical condition with serious injuries to his upper body. He died Feb. 2.
The woman, Folster's girlfriend, also needed hospitalization and was later reported to be in stable condition.
According to police, three males, aged 17, 18 and 21 — who were known to the victims — had been in the Bannerman Avenue home.
"During the early morning hours [of Jan. 25] arguments erupted between the male victim and these males causing two of the males to leave," police said. "A short time later the two males returned to the residence armed with knives."
They said Folster was attacked and stabbed a number of times and when his girlfriend went to help him, she was also stabbed.
The attackers fled the home and that's when police were called.
The suspects were arrested following an investigation and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
A charge of second-degree murder was added, against all three of the males, after police learned that Folster died.
With Folster's death, Winnipeg has recorded its second homicide of 2012.
His mother, Charlene Folster, told CBC News on Saturday that her son was a generous man who fell in with a bad crowd at an early age and led a difficult life.
His girlfriend, Judy Lee Walker, remains in hospital recovering from her injuries in the attack.
