A soldier from Winnipeg has been honoured for holding his ground in a battle against insurgents in Afghanistan in 2010.

Sgt. Graham Verrier was among seven members of the Canadian Forces to receive the Medal of Military Valour from Gov. Gen. David Johnston at a ceremony at Rideau Hall on Thursday.

When Verrier's patrol was ambushed by insurgents in Afghanistan on July 31, 2010, he "immediately initiated a frontal assault on the enemy position" despite the fact that he was "fully exposed to enemy fire," according to Rideau Hall.

Verrier also inspired his fellow soldiers to fight the insurgents until the ambush ended.
