Winnipeg animal shelters are overwhelmed with dogs and desperate to find homes, prompting one to hold a Puppypalooza sale.

Many of the canine castaways were Christmas presents that didn't work out, according to Hull’s Haven, a volunteer-run non-profit rescue group that uses foster homes until dogs can be adopted.

Right now they have more than 50 dogs and no more foster homes to place them in, said Sally Hull.

“This is the first time in the six years we've been in operation that we've had to say we just can't take anymore,” she said.

Similarly, the Winnipeg Humane Society has such a surplus that it is holding its first ever, “Puppypalooza” on Wednesday.

During the “amazing one-day offer”, the pups are available for $100 with everything included – first shots, neutering or spaying.

As well, Manitoba Mutts dog rescue is teeming with tail-waggers and recently held an adoption fair to find homes. The group takes in dogs from all over Manitoba who have been abandoned, abused or surrendered.

The City of Winnipeg’s animal services agency is also dealing with a doggy dilemma, with most of the pooches' pictures available for viewing online.
