Toronto police have identified a woman found unconscious with severe injuries early Tuesday morning in the Port Lands as Leanne Freeman, 23, of Winnipeg.

She later died in hospital of a gunshot wound to the body. Police are treating the incident as the city's 42nd homicide of the year.

Staff Sgt. Ian Moyer of 55 Division said the woman had no identification on her body, but that they have received many calls from the public.

"You don't know the why until you know the who, generally," Moyer said. "We've got lots of information from the public, and the volume of information is usually indicative [of] how long it will take for us to move forward with the investigation. And we've had a lot of calls this morning, so that tells me that somebody out there knows something, and that usually means we find out fairly quickly."

Police said Freeman had been in Toronto for a few months. They're asking for anyone who knows how she spent the last 48 hours to come forward.

Freeman died at St. Michael's Hospital after being found in a deserted industrial area, on Unwin Avenue near Leslie Street.

Police say it wasn't clear whether her body had been dropped there or if that's where the attack took place.

A passerby found the woman in a pool of blood and called 911 at 1:12 a.m., assuming she'd been hit by a car. Police soon discovered she had massive trauma to her body.

Investigators sealed off the area and spent the day canvassing local businesses for information and surveillance video.
